Interview by Miranda Cardenas
On Friday, November 11, 2022 British/Irish pop band New Rules released their brand new single, “Late in the Evening.” I was lucky enough to interview them about it.
Is the new single similar to previous work or would you say it has a different sound?
Alec: It’s both.
Nathan: Think Emily, that’s what it’s similar to from our old music.
How long is your typical process from song idea to its release?
Alec: We’ve actually had “Late in the Evening” in the band since 2020, I think it was Christmas 2020. It takes time, when you’re this indecisive. That’s not important, the important thing is that it’s out now. We did about six vocals on this song before we got the finished one.
Ryan: It’s typically from one to one and a half years. It shouldn’t be that long, but yeah I guess we’re really indecisive.
Is the song self produced?
Alec: It’s not entirely self produced. But it is Co-Produced by the three of us, and our sweet sweet friend Jake Gosling, Luke Fitton, and Jamie Scott.
What’s your creative process like? Do you guys normally start with lyrics, melody, chords? How would you describe your songwriting process?
Ryan: It can be anything.
What does your dream music video look like?
Ryan: I loved the Really Wanna Dance With You video shoot.
Alec: We should make a sequel.
Nathan: We didn’t have videos for the last songs we released
Ryan: We may or may not have a video for this song, not announced yet.
Nathan: Should we talk about the video? I think maybe we should talk about the video a little bit. Where did we film it, what was the studio called?
Ryan: We did it in LA. It was called Balboa studios.
Nathan: Balboa studios in LA, we actually did it quite recently, we did it like a week ago.
Ryan: Rocky Balboa. Yeah, it was a quick turn around. Hence some of the dodgy - dodgy facial shots of the boys.
Alec: Yes
Nathan: But it was fun, it was really good. Yeah, it was a good day.
Video Context:
Ryan: It’s pretty straightforward
Alec: It’s not a concept video, it’s a performance video
Ryan: It lets the song shine as well
Alec: This video is for the song
What are you most excited for in the band’s near future?
Nathan: We have new merch coming! And we actually posted it because we wanted to get fan’s opinions. Which is something I think we should do more because, ultimately, I feel like you guys probably know what you want. We’ve got some good ideas for merch. Very excited.
Ryan: The new T-shirt’s sexy. That’s what I would be wearing today
Nathan: Yeah, I think it’s my favorite merch we’ve ever made.
Ryan: Yeah same.
Alec: Two weeks and we’re back on the East Coast doing our first little headline tour over there. And that’s exciting.
Ryan: Yeah I guess it is our first US tour really, isn’t it. The other ones were just like little shows, but this is a tour.
Will you play “Late in the Evening” on tour?
Ryan: We might have to, the reaction’s been very good.
Do you have many other unreleased songs?
Ryan: I won’t say any names, but I think we've got a couple in the same world as “Late in the Evening”. “Late in the Evening” feels good.
Ideal place to perform?
Ryan: Bowery Ballroom in New York is such an iconic venue. Can’t wait to play that one.
Nathan: It’s gonna be good.
Ryan: I think my parents are going. We would love to go to Japan.
Alec: We’ve been to Sweden, but we haven’t been since 2020.
Ryan: We also never did a show there, we just did some songwriting.
Alec: Penning off materials.
Ryan: Also would love to play the Red Rocks Amphitheater in Colorado.
Nathan: There’s a lot of places we want to come to, or come back to. We have a lot more planned, we kind of working out where we go next.
One message that you would like to give your fans and potential listeners?
Nathan: If you’re from America and you haven’t got a ticket yet, come get a ticket. Come to the show. East Coast tour, it’s going to be good.
Tell every person you know about this song, that would be really helpful.
FUN FACTS
Their ideal collaboration would be with John Mayer
They felt most inspired in the attic of their old house. Where they first lived together.
The best advice they’ve been given and the message they would like to share with readers is to always "Treat People With Kindness" (they are big Harry Styles fans).
If they weren’t in a band: Ryan would play football (soccer) and Nathan said he would be a chef.
What was your first “wow” moment, where you realized music was it?
R: every live show
A: when people considered “New rules” a band and not a Dua Lipa song
Importantly, they do have plans for an album as they have many unreleased songs!
