Alt-rockers Suit Up, Soldier have just released the pick-me-up album we could all use right now. Following the success of their up-beat single ‘Tongue Tied Twisted’, debut LP ‘Curse the Day I Act My Age’ is definitely one to keep on rotation this summer. Its first track, ‘(Welcome to the Main Event)’, features a 1914 recording of Harry Houdini introducing his most famous escape, certainly setting the tone for a unique experience. ‘Crying In College’ offers a note of understanding and hope to those entering the world as a self-reliant person for the first time, followed by ‘Picture’ – a sound that stood out as a modern take on ‘80s disco. The eighth track ‘Kaleidoscope’ made me want to fly through the wind, Perks of Being A Wallflower-style, before proceeding into the more intimate ‘Roses are Red, Violets are Violet’, which managed to capture the warm energy of sitting by a campfire with your closest friends. This album is studded with passionate guitar (and drum!) solos and unexpected twists, showing a clear focus on detail.
Hailing from Salt Lake City, Suit Up, Soldier draws inspiration from The 1975, The Band CAMINO, Panic! at the Disco, Walk the Moon, and other alt-rock powerhouses – while pioneering a unique style that ranges from electro-pop to classic rock. The band’s first single, 'Tongue Tied Twisted', has organically surpassed half a million streams on Spotify. Having opened for COIN and with a pandemic-delayed tour in the works, I am eager to see what the future holds for this brand-new group.
