Today, Alexander 23 released "Caught in the Middle," a spare but upbeat song about drifting apart from a former lover. The Los Angeles-based singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist’s latest single begins with a bare-bones guitar line and Alexander singing about receiving a surprising phone call—one where "no words came out" on the other end, despite the deep bond the two once shared. As Alexander ruminates further on the thin line that separates knowing and not knowing one another, swirling flutes and plush vocal harmonies swoop in and out, reflecting the thoughts rushing through his head.

“'Caught in the Middle’ is about the uncomfortable familiarity I have with someone I was once in a relationship with,” says Alexander of the follow-up to the infectious “IDK You Yet,” which has garnered nearly 100 million global streams (39 million in the U.S. alone) since its release in May. “It’s strange to know someone’s deepest, darkest secrets, but not be up to date on their daily setbacks and triumphs—to truly be in between ‘lovers’ and ‘strangers.'"

He's spending this year working on even more new music, and recently told Rolling Stone that he's also been cooking a lot and learning to DJ during self-isolation.
