It’s been two years since we have heard new music from Melbourne’s own Between You & Me. They have begun to release singles off of their sophomore album and while we don’t have a name or a release date, we can only imagine what the record will be like especially after hearing these two new singles. Beginning with “Supervillain”, which was released on July 11, 2021, which after seeing the music video gave the insight of being controlled by someone else and those watching not having the full story. It’s the notion of being the villain while others are pulling the strings which ultimately leaves you to be the puppet in the show.
Shortly thereafter on August 25th, the band released their second single, “Deadbeat”. By definition, deadbeat means “an idle, feckless, or disreputable person” and that is proven just within the first line of the song, when vocalist Jake Wilson says “I never call back, I know the reasons come and go slack.” Before the pandemic hit, BYAM was a band that was nearly always on the road whether it be in their home country of Australia or going to the UK and even venturing out into the North American regions. It is to no surprise that that amount of traveling can put a strain on interpersonal relationships. This song portrays the hostile aspect of realizing that while they are pursuing their dreams and furthering their careers within the industry, there is also a strain on the relationships back home. Throughout this pandemic, the world has had to endure lockdowns left and right and for Australia, there seems to be a new one every month. While this puts a whole different strain onto the careers of musicians, it has given the opportunity to be present within the lives that they leave behind when they go on the road.
This track is the recognition that there is no try when they are gone and almost a sense of they know their person will still be there when they get home. So, why put in the extra effort of acknowledging the thin thread they are treading on a daily basis from not only being away constantly but also not having the energy to put forth into those relationships and only do so once they return home. Just like any other song, there is the interpretation and the reasoning why the band created the song and then there are the interpretations that the fans create and relate back into their own lives. Having spent time at home and being in lockdowns, it has given nearly everyone a sense of understanding where they stand within their relationships and within their own livelihood. As human beings, we are used to being on the go and not understanding the effects that it takes on our relationships because we never really had the time to sit back and realize what was going on but with the pandemic, we were given an opportunity to actually spend time with our significant others, our families, and even simply with ourselves.
Just from the taste we have been given with these two singles, we can be sure that the next record BYAM puts out will be a heavy hearted one. It hasn’t been an easy feat for the guys, they had a pandemic halt their third North American support run, they got stuck in a foreign country, had to acquire an exemption of travel for their producer Sam Guaiana just so they could record their album and now having to street team their way into promotion. There have been many roadblocks for this band and they could have given up after the first few stops but their determination just goes to show that while their second single is titled “Deadbeat”, they are just the opposite of that.
Keep an eye out for Between You & Me, they are nowhere near being done and have a long way to go and their sophomore album is just around the corner. For all the things involving the band, be sure to follow them on their Instagram and Twitter @BYAMAUS
