The first time I heard about Twin XL was right before the Maine’s 8123 Fest in January of 2019 because my friend Kelsey told me that I should check out their music, and one of Galaxy’s photographers shot photos of them at the fest (unfortunately I couldn’t go). Fast forward to April where Kelsey and I saw Twin XL open for the Maine at the Teragram Ballroom in Los Angeles, and I was automatically hooked to their music! They just released their debut EP in March, How To Talk To Strangers, so they performed a couple songs from it and gained the crowd’s full attention. Kelsey and I got up early that morning, but were instantly energized and jammed out hard to their set. Their EP is phenomenal and if you had to describe the style, it’d be a mixture of Indie/Pop/Alternative. Personally, I admire how the lyrics are relatable and they’re one of the few artists whose music makes me feel infinite, my favorite feeling. Kelsey had known Stephen and John Gomez from back in the Summer Set days, and she introduced me to them and Cameron after the show. They’re some of the sweetest people I’ve met, and we told them we already bought our tickets to their first headline show at the Troubadour in Los Angeles; I was so excited to hear their full set.
At the Troubadour show, Kelsey and I were part of the first 30 people to buy tickets so we got to go in early for VIP, where Twin XL performed a few acoustic songs and we got to chat with them. It was so fun! For the show, they opened with “Sunglasses,” which is an upbeat bop that will catch anyone’s attention. My favorite songs by them are “Don’t Wake Me, I’m Still Dreaming” and “Neon Summer,” so I was happy they performed those. They also performed a new song, “Messy,” which was AMAZING. I can’t wait for them to release it. Their last song was “Good” and after the song ended, we chanted “TWIN XL TWIN XL” and they came back out to perform it a second time (John made them do it haha), which was even better! This was honestly one of the best shows I’ve been to. There’s no better feeling than seeing your favorite bands and singing along with your friends, and not caring about anything else. After the show, Kelsey and I talked with them for a bit and congratulated them on their first headline show. They’re truly a band who puts their dreams into action! I love how Twin XL’s music is really unique and chill, and how they write their own songs; Their music puts me in such a positive mood no matter what and makes me want to dance. Seeing Cameron, John, and Stephen’s passion and happiness while performing was really heartwarming. I’m super proud of them and know that they’ll continue to achieve their goals and grow a larger fanbase! Please give them a chance and I promise you won’t regret it! 😊
