Interview: Douglas Shea on his new single "Tired!"

What made you decide you wanted to pursue a career in music?

I started singing when I was about 4 and wrote my first song in the 4th grade, a love song to be exact. Music has always been my favorite passion but it wasn’t until I took an entrepreneurship class my Junior year of college that I actually gained the courage to really pursue it in a professional capacity.

Who influenced you when you were younger and influences your sound today?

I grew up listening to a lot of Maroon 5 and I still get giddy when one of their older songs comes on the radio! Today, my favorite artists are Ed Sheeran, Lauv and Jake Scott. I love their creative spin on the traditional meaning of a singer/songwriter in pop music and the way they seamlessly bridge multiple genres. They are definitely the primary artists that influence my music, but I like keeping up with a lot of current upcoming sounds in general.

What was your songwriting and production process like for "Tired?"

Both were pretty abnormal! I started writing Tired about a year ago and it was focused on a pretty different topic than it is now. At first I wrote it about feeling exhausted from depression and anxiety. But then that felt too solemn when I wanted it to be uplifting/ hopeful, so I rewrote it in March of this year. As far as production, it was great working with Devon Oakley and our visions meshed really well. The strange part was we started working together on it right before Covid hit and had to finish it remotely over the phone. It slowed down the process quite a bit, but even with that little hiccup, I’m really happy with how it all turned out!

What inspired you to add an EDM type of style to the chorus?

I’ve always really liked EDM, particularly genres like future bass which focuses more on beautiful melodies. I wrote Tired with the intention of having a drop in it and Devon really brought it to life with the future bass vibes.

What do you hope your music will bring to listeners?

My goal as an artist is to make people feel less alone and spread as much positivity as I can to as many people as I can. All of my songs are aimed at giving people hope and reassuring them that the struggles they are facing now are surpassable, even if it doesn’t feel like it.

So I heard you have a Tik Tok, how would you say that has helped you spread your message?

TikTok is an awesome way to connect with new and current fans. It has definitely helped me work towards my goal (above) and I’m really grateful to be part of that community. My user name is douglas_shea_music; you can check out my channel at https://vm.tiktok.com/ZMJMmdL3B/

What future projects can your listeners look forward to?

I have been working on a couple more songs while in quarantine that I’m really proud of as well. I don’t want to give too much away but the next releases will follow fairly quickly!
