Interview: Eliza Klatt of Eliza & The Delusionals

Eliza & The Delusionals was founded by Singer/Guitarist Eliza Klatt in 2015 in Gold Coast, Australia. After a slew of well-received early singles, the band caught the attention of triple j which led to supports with artists such as Grinspoon, Dear Seattle and Killing Heidi, appearances at landmark festivals, and major radio support both locally and internationally. As first taste of their forthcoming EP, ‘Just Exist’ has been playing on high rotation in North America and crowned 'Critical Cut' by AltNation. Having signed with Cooking Vinyl Australia and APA, the doors are well and truly starting to open for this band internationally.


I have gotten the chance to talk with Eliza about touring in 2020, new music, and the group's journey as a band so far.



Your newest single 'Pull Apart Heart’ just dropped and I’m loving it. Tell me a bit about the writing process and what that song means to you.

Thank you! I wrote the lyrics when I was going through a lot of changes in my personal life. It was a lot of really hard decision making, and I remember writing ‘Pull Apart Heart’ in my notebook and I felt like that line really summed up how I was feeling at the time. The rest of the song wrote itself around that idea.  What are you most excited for with this tour with Silversun Pickups and then touring alongside beabadoobee?

We have had the best time with Silversun Pickups. The band and their team are the kindest people we’ve ever met. I’ve been listening to the band since I was 14 years old so to be touring with them and hanging out with them is a dream. beabadoobee is one of our current favorite artists and we’re visiting some of our favorite American cities with her. We’re super excited about it. 

What are your interests outside of music, and do they ever bleed into what you do with the band? If yes, how so?

For me personally I like doing art, which ties in with the band’s merch and visuals. I love fashion and make up and things like that as well - which all ties in with the band’s visuals and artwork. Visuals are a big thing for us so it’s really fun being able to do that. 


"A STATE OF LIVING IN AN OBJECTIVE REALITY" EP by Eliza & The Delusionals (out March 20th) Does now feel like a good time to be a band breaking into the music scene? What are some of the challenges?

I guess it’s as good as any - we were very lucky to get our song "Just Exist" on American radio and it’s really changed the game for us. We are just thankful for people that have been listening to it and coming to the shows and singing along. We definitely faced some challenges with our Visas and travel. We’re a very long way from home and it’s not very easy financially. I think that’s what stops a lot of Australian bands from touring the states.  What are some of the best and most memorable moments you've all had so far?

Every show on this tour with Silversun Pickups has been memorable. They’ve been the most responsive crowds we’ve ever played to - and it’s really overwhelming for us because most of these cities we’ve never even visited, and people are coming along early and singing the words to our songs.


Do all of the recent and upcoming releases feel true to where you are in your life right now (lyrically or otherwise)?


I feel like as much as I am very proud of our upcoming EP, I’ve already disconnected with those songs emotionally. A lot of them were written at least a year before we even got them in the studio, and my life was very different back then when those songs were being written. I see that as a positive thing though - I think it means I’ve grown and changed as a person. I’m glad I’m not in the place I was when a lot of those songs were being written.


What can we expect with this upcoming EP? Are you writing any new material at the moment?


We’ve got all of the new songs in our live set; the EP is five tracks. I think it’s our favorite release so far, we’re super proud of this release and when we got into the studio we had gone through a lot of big changes as a band and as individuals, so it was a massive release from all of that. I think that’s why we’re really excited for it to be finally out. Kurt and I have been working on a lot of new stuff that we’re super excited for as well - hopefully a lot of that will be introduced into our live set later this year.

What’s the main takeaway you hope people get from your music and live shows?

I hope everyone has a good time. We have so much fun on stage - and when we have a high energy crowd we are really fueled by that.
