This is not a drill. This Friday SZA dropped her highly anticipated album “SOS''. 5 years after the release of her blockbuster debut album “Ctrl” which changed the path of her career and shifted the music world, the R&B singer is back and finally offered to her fans her sophomore album, which includes 23 tracks, featuring Travis Scott, Phoebe Bridgers,
Don Toliver and Ol’ Dirty Bastard.
The album offers our favorite classic SZA sounds but is also an introduction to a brand-new side of the singer. A mix of R&B, Alternative, Trap, and surprisingly Pop-Rock as well. The album is not only being praised for its breathtaking sound but also SZA's incredible lyricism. In this new opus, the singer gets even more intimate than she did in “Ctrl” and opens up about her fears, her anxiety in ‘Low’, her anger in “Kill Bill” and “Seek & Destroy” for instance, her love and failed relationships but also argue on social subjects notably in “Ghost in the Machine” featuring Phoebe Bridgers where the two sing about the weight of technological advancement on our lives. The title “SOS” reflects the singer's cry for help, how she feels lost, “Low” and “Blind”, and how she is still struggling with her attachment issues in her relationships…
The album was incredibly well received by critics, with a score of 94 on Metacritic, making it the highest Metacritic score for an album this year with “Motomami” by Spanish singer Rosalia. It debuted with over 68M streams on Spotify, making it the biggest debut for a black female artist in history, with SZA topping the Global Artist Chart, ahead of Bad Bunny and Taylor Swift. According to Hits Daily Double preliminary predictions, the singer’s sophomore album is on pace to debut at #1 on the Billboard 200 with a predicted 300K units.
The singer also started to tease on her social media the release of a deluxe edition for her newest album, which will include the fan-favorite unreleased track “PSA”.
